Kate Atkins

Kate Atkins, Tom Fradley, and Mary Pillai are all experienced and highly qualified specialists in dyslexia, academic writing and study skills in higher education. 


HEDS: Who Are We?

Kate has 8 years’ experience in Further Education as a SEN teacher. She has recently completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Professional Studies in Education in Literacy Difficulties and Dyslexia and has Approved Teacher Status (ATS) from the British Dyslexia Association. This enables Kate to provide dyslexia tuition to both children and adults.


Kate has professional membership of the British Dyslexia Association with over 4 years’ experience of providing study skills support for higher education students at Bishop Grosseteste University and the University of Lincoln.

Tom has 15 years’ experience working in a range of educational settings teaching literacy and study skills support. He has provided study skills support to HE students for the last 7 years and currently works with students from Bishop Grosseteste University and Lincoln University.


He has an MA in Specific Learning Difficulties and has a dyslexia assessment practicing certificate. He is a member of PATOSS and is approved by SFE to deliver specialist dyslexia tuition. He is currently working towards an EdD in Higher Education.

Tom Fradley

Mary has 20 years’ experience working in Learning Development in higher education. She managed an inclusive learning development team at De Montfort University (2006-2011) and was Principal Lecturer, a University Teaching Fellow and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.


She was part of the team that developed and delivered De Montfort University’s Master’s degree in Dyslexia Studies and also designed and delivered dyslexia training courses for tutors in FE and HE.
